Inkjet & Bubble Jet Printers
Increasingly popular due to improvements in print quality and colour facility inkjet machines are now extremely well priced. Multi cartridge machines are more economic to run as individual colours can be changed when empty. Bear in mind the wide variance in print speeds of different models and for best print results use a premium paper

Laser Printers
Designed for heavier duty usage, laser printers are categorised by print speed and memory capacity. They work in the same way as a photocopier in that the consumable is a toner/drum and are therefore more economical to run

Dot Matrix Printers
As they are slower and operate at higher noise levels than inkjet or laser printers, dot matrix printers are often only purchased for use with multi-part stationery where the impact of the dot matrix pins on the paper creates a second or third copy, such as with invoices, delivery notes etc.

Dye Sublimation (Photo) Printers
Driven by the digital camera market Dye-sublimation printers are becoming more popular and allow you to print photo-lab-quality pictures at home. This technology uses dyes corresponding to the four basic colours used in professional printing: cyan, magenta, yellow and black. It produces a smooth (no dots!) photo quality image, and is also less vulnerable to fading and distortion over time
